How Interim and Permanent Housing Can Work Together to End Homelessness

All Home hosted this event virtually on May 12, 2022 as part of East Bay Housing Organizations’ Affordable Housing Month.

Event description:

Interim housing (short-term homes with supportive services intended to help people exit homelessness and find permanent housing) is a necessary tool to help end homelessness, alongside permanent housing and homelessness prevention efforts. Interim housing can be different things (from safe parking sites to Homekey projects), can go by different names, and can be challenging to fund and operate. We convened this event to consider the opportunities and challenges of advancing interim and permanent housing simultaneously to dramatically and rapidly reduce homelessness in the Bay Area.

This event explained some of the complexities of interim housing and successful models that are working around the Bay Area. The discussion also dug deeper into one promising way to create more of it — using vacant sites that are slated for permanent housing. We heard from experts about the ins and outs of interim housing, with case studies from those who have successfully advanced interim housing sites. They showed how permanent housing sites have been and can be used to temporarily house people on the path out of homelessness.
