Casa Esperanza

San Mateo County was awarded a $16 million Homekey grant to purchase, rehabilitate and operate the Comfort Inn & Suites at 1818 El Camino Real in Redwood City as interim supportive housing for people exiting homelessness. The facility began operating in early 2023. Renovations added kitchenettes to the 51-room property, which now features on-site services providing education, employment, mental health rehabilitation and medical assistance, coordinated by Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco.

As of July 2025, San Mateo County has received $131 million in Homekey grants, which have been used to buy and repurpose hotels and other buildings to provide both interim and long-term housing for formerly homeless residents.
