After launching in October of 2021, Richmond Neighborhood Housing Services’ Keys to Equity was a 3-year-long program that provided homeowners in Oakland with the support to build Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) on their property in a streamlined and economical way. Through financing, education, and affordable construction services, the program reduced several barriers to ADU construction to create more housing in areas that are at-risk of greater displacement and expand access to wealth-building for homeowners, with a focus on Black homeowners and those who have been disproportionately impacted by systemic racial and economic inequities within the housing system.
