In December 2021, the City of San Jose voted to remove ground-level commercial space requirements in the construction of new affordable housing. Where previously 100% affordable housing developments in San Jose were required to devote a minimum square footage to shops and restaurants, lifting the policy will maximize the number of affordable housing units being generated and establish affordable housing development as an utmost priority. These new guidelines will also reduce costs for developers, enabling further affordable housing development in San Jose.
